The Chinese Minister assumes that the leader of the

movement was Hung Tsun-Kwel who resided in Hong Kong. No

intimation to this effect has been given to me by the

Chinese authorities, but the statement of the Chinese Minis

ter corroborates the report that a grave crime has been

perpetrated in this Colony by order of the Cantenese

authorities. Our investigations are not yet complete, but se

far they go to show that three Chinese officials came to

Hong Kong and took a reem in which a man, whom they supposeč

to be Hung Taun-Kwei was induced to visit them, where he

was murdered and his body taken in a Chinese gunboat te

vanten where a large reward offered for him alive or dead

was claimed. It turned out however that the murdered man was

net Hung. This Government has secured a photograph of the

body but so far we cannot trace its identity. Hung Tsun-Kwei

who was connected with the German Mission has left the Calen
